How long does EV battery last, and must it be replaced?

How long does an electric car battery last and how often does it need to be replaced?

When I first started getting interested in electric cars, my main question was: "How long does the battery actually last? Will I have to replace it every couple of years?". Here's what the reality turned out to be.

The Battery is the Heart of an Electric Car

Modern electric cars use lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. They are durable, long-lasting, and do not require any complicated maintenance.

Most manufacturers state a battery life of 8 to 15 years, meaning it will easily outlast at least two conventional gasoline cars.

Does the battery need to be replaced?

The good news is that the average driver almost never has to replace the entire battery.

Here's why:

  • Batteries wear down very slowly;

  • After 8–10 years, they retain approximately 70-85% of their original capacity;

  • The decline is gradual and not critical for daily driving.

Replacement may only be necessary in case of a manufacturing defect or severe damage - but such cases are rare.

How to extend battery life?

  • Do not keep the charge at 100% all the time.

  • Do not discharge to 0%.

  • Do not constantly charge only with fast charging—use normal charging sometimes, too.

  • Avoid overheating (long hours in the sun without moving).

And the best part: modern electric car batteries are designed to last for many years, so there is no need to worry about "expensive replacement."
