When I started seriously thinking about buying an electric car, two main questions plagued me:

"How often do I need to charge it?" and "Is it essential to install a charger at home?"

Everyone considering the switch to an electric car thinks about this. And in reality, everything is much simpler than it seems.

How often should I charge an electric car?

 

 

The frequency of charging depends on two things: battery capacity and how much you drive every day.

1. Battery Capacity and Real Range

   Most modern electric vehicles provide:

•  50 - 60 kWh - 300 - 400 km range
•  70 - 80 kWh - 450 - 550 km 

Crossovers from China, on average, give 400 - 500 km in mixed driving conditions.

For the city, this is even too much, because the average driver in Bishkek travels 30 - 50 km per day.

This means:

👉 An electric car is usually charged  1 - 2 times a week.

2. How often should I charge in winter?

Yes, consumption is higher in winter - heating, fog lights, seat heating, and a cold battery.

But even with the reduced winter range:

• a 60 kWh battery gives 200 - 250 km,

2. You drive a lot daily.

If your mileage is above 120 - 150 km per day, overnight charging helps a lot.

3. You want independence.

A home charger means comfort and stability.

 

When you can easily live without a home charger

 

 

This is the most important point - most urban EV owners live without a home charging station.

 

Here's when it is truly convenient:

 

1.Your daily mileage is 20 - 60 km.

Then it's enough to charge 1 - 2 times a week at a public station.

2. There is a charger near home or work.

For many, a workplace charger becomes their "home" one.

3. You don't mind stopping for 20 - 30 minutes.

While you drink coffee or shop, the car charges to 40-80 %.

4. You live in an apartment building.

Installing a personal charger there is indeed more complicated, so most simply use the city's infrastructure.

 

Can you fully rely only on fast city chargers?

Yes and many people do.

Especially if you charge not to 100% but  for example to 70 - 80% - it is faster and more convenient.
